How to Get Bird Mites out of Ears, Eyes and Noses and Mucous Membranes
For more than ten years now, bird mite, rodent mite and springtail clients have been telling me that it's particularly difficult to stop micro tiny critters from attacking eyes, ears, noses and mucous membranes. This includes intimate areas such as the vagina. These are some of the best products recommended by my pest control clients who've suffered through drastic infestations, but please do consult a doctor before establishing a new regimen. Different people have different sensitivities! The information in this article is not intended to replace prescriptions recommended by your doctor.
Grapefruit Seed Extract Drops for Ears
Grapefruit seed extract has long been prized as an emergency water purifying agent, but it's also commonly used to fight intestinal parasites, respiratory infections, ear infections and antibiotic resistant urinary tract infections. All over the world, GSE is used for killing salmonella, E.Coli, staph, strep, viruses and fungi

Vapor Cream Can be Used to Prevent Mites from Entering the Nose
Vapor rubs and creams aren't labeled for use inside ears and noses, but they can be applied to ear lobes and EXTERNAL ear parts. The mentholated fumes serve as a nice repellent to discourage mites from entering the ear cavity. Vapo cream differs from vapo rub because it's absorbed into the skin more readily, and it's cheaper to obtain large amounts for a decent price. It's great for those times when you don't want to apply a thick, greasy substance near your hair. This pack of 4 tubes sells for $7.95. Vapor cream can also be applied above the upper lip to discourage mites from entering the nose.

Disposable Shower Caps - 120 Pieces for $9.99
Disposable shower caps can be adjusted to cover the ears while you sleep. You can use masking tape to secure the edge of the cap to your forehead and hair line. You might even rub a little vapor cream outside the elastic seal to prevent mites from approaching the ears and scalps. In most cases where folks swear that bird mites are embedded in their skin, the area of focus tends to be the scalp. If you're currently battling a bird mite, rodent mite or sprinttail infestation, a good shower cap can be your best friend.

Mentholated Eye Drops
No over-the-counter product can replace a visit to the doctor, but mentholated eye drops are known to sooth the itch and sting associated with overpopulation of the common human demodx mite and more serious parasitic mites that can attack the eye area. The menthol may also play a role in repelling mites. Rhoto-V ice drops also contain boric acid, a common ingredient used in the treatment of serious eye conditions such as pink eye. Boric acid is the "secret ingredient" in all sorts of bait products used to poison larger insects like ants and cockroaches, but don't try to mix regular boric acid into your own eye applications. A highly purified medical grade form of boric acid is used in making eye drops.

Boric Acid Vaginal Suppositories
It's not the most pleasant topic in the world, but parasitic mites can enter the anus or vagina, causing great physical discomfort and emotional distress. Boric acid vaginal suppositories are frequently used against yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis and vaginitis. Such products can also be used to fight parasites. Ask your doctor if a boric acid regime may be right for you. Boric acid is the "secret ingredient" in all sorts of bait products used to poison larger insects like ants and cockroaches, but don't try to mix regular boric acid into your own eye applications. A highly purified medical grade form of boric acid is used in making things like eye drops and vaginal suppositories.

MSM for Internal Parasites
Sulfur is not just a valuable skin mite treatment and home pesticide. It's widely used as a supplement to treat joint pain, inflammation, lung tumors and intestinal parasites. Holistic and traditional practitioners share a deep respect for MSM. Among other things, it scavenges free radicals, relieves allergies, helps the liver fight cholesterol buildup, controls stomach acidity, soothes ulcers and coats the intestinal tract so parasites have trouble clinging. It also increases body's ability to produce insulin.

Sulfur Powder for Deep Skin Treatment (Not for mucous membranes)
There's a reason why sulfur tops my list of organic treatments for skin mites. Sulfur is often prescribed by doctors to treat acne, scabies, psoriasis, eczema and fungal infections. Over a ten-year period, I've spoken to countless parasite clients who say they've used sulfur powder to kill mites in the home and treat chronic skin conditions associated with scabies, bird mites, rodent mites, cheyletiella mites and springtails. Sulfur powder can be mixed with water, coconut oil, olive oil or aloe. If your skin is dry or cracked, an oil based mixing agent may be preferable. If your skin tends to be oily or acne prone, aloe can help control those conditions without contributing excess oil. Don't think of aloe as an "inactive" ingredient that merely helps to spread sulfur more easily. In holistic circles, aloe is associated with the treatment of acne, parasites, sunburns and fungal skin infections. One study concluded that aloe vera gel was as effective as benzyl benzonate in the treatment of scabies. (Source).

Charcoal filtered aloe is a superior choice for greater efficacy
Note that you won't find an expiration date on most bottles of aloe. That's because aloe is known for losing its potency quickly, and manufacturers don't want to disclose how long their bottles have been sitting on shelves. For this reason, I recommend cold pressed, charcoal filtered aloe. Charcoal filtered brands can confidently stamp bottles with expiration dates up to three years.

A Great Organic Treatment for Carpets, Furniture, Skin and Bedding
Dr. Ben's Evictor is an organic formula that can be applied to humans, dogs, couches, carpets and furniture. It contains hydrated silica to dry out the insect's exoskeleton and cedar oil to shut down the insect's breathing pores. It works by attacking the insect's exoskeleton, respiratory system and central nervous system at the same time. It also dehydrates and dissolves insect eggs, larvae and pupae on contact. This product leaves behind a strong cedar aroma to repel mites from sprayed territory. It's a nice skin repellent for biting insects, a safe flea treatment for dogs and a popular leave-on treatment for burrowed mites. Wide area treatment of carpeting is fine, as Dr. Ben's Evictor is classified by the EPA as a low risk pesticide. This product won't stain clothing or furniture made of fabric. Fogging protocols are highly recommended for environmental mite cases, as bird and rodent mites can transfer to walls and ceilings to avoid carpets that have been treated with pesticides. The dry fog will settle upon walls, coat ceilings and penetrate unseen crevices that typical spray protocols don't reach.

A Long Lasting Treatment for Yards and Gardens
If your flea or mite infestation began outside and worked its way indoors using pets or shoes as a vehicle, yard treatment is a must. All liquid pesticides evaporate, but cedar granules deliver a fresh blast of cedar infused liquid to the soil or grass each time it rains. A generous 20-pound bag sells for around $38. Granules are great for the person who desires a pest free garden but doesn't have time to keep repeating weekly or monthly spray protocols connected to various liquid products. Granules may also be used in conjunction with liquids. Just spray your favorite liquid for an immediate punch and spread granules to keep those effects rolling for months on end.
